
Netball Uganda’s Newly Elected Leadership Holds First Annual General Meeting
The newly elected leadership of Netball Uganda, led by President Jocelyn Ucanda, convened their first Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Copper Chimney Lounge, Lugogo. The gathering brought together delegates from various regions across the country to discuss and launch the federation’s five-year strategic plan.
A New Era of Leadership
In her address, President Jocelyn Ucanda emphasized an open-door policy, which she declared as a cornerstone of her administration.
We are committed to inclusivity, transparency, and collaboration to propel netball in Uganda to greater heights,
she stated. Uganda Netball Uganda was down graded from priority one category sports after series of leadership void affected the game. Madam Jocelyn Ucanda Leadership will have an uphill task to fully license the federation to acquire such status which Netball has had its capabilities.
The event also saw the attendance of representatives from the National Council of Sports (NCS), including Sarah Chelegant the acting Secretary General National Council of Sports, who commended the new leadership for successfully steering Netball in the right direction, hosting their first AGM and reinstating Uganda netball with international bodies.
I congratulate Netball Uganda for taking charge as the new governing body and setting the foundation for growth and development, Chelegant remarked.
I congratulate the She Cranes for attaining acceptance from the world governing body and Netball Africa. This is a significant milestone in regaining our rightful place in the international netball community,Chelegant added.
Addressing Regional Representation
One of the key discussions during the meeting centered on the need for improved representation of different regions, particularly the North Eastern region, which was highlighted as an area requiring more inclusion. Delegates called upon the federation to ensure equitable facilitation of regional representatives for future meetings and activities.
Transition and Re-Licensing Process
Netball in Uganda is currently undergoing a transition period following the disbandment of the former executive under Sarah Kityo. The new federation is in the process of re-licensing to gain formal recognition from the National Council of Sports. Chelegant drew attention to the importance of aligning with the new National Sports Act of 2023, specifically sections 8, 9, and 10, which outline eligibility requirements for registration.
Compliance with the National Sports Act
The new sports law requires that 75% of all sports entities in Uganda be fully registered with an AGM. Netball Uganda’s commitment to compliance and governance reforms is expected to strengthen its position and ensure better support for the sport’s development nationwide.
Looking Ahead
The the national netball league will also resume on the 4th and 12 the April for both women and men netball game.
The AGM marked the beginning of a transformative journey for Netball Uganda. With a renewed focus on governance, regional representation, and international recognition, the new leadership aims to elevate netball’s profile and foster growth at all levels of the game.
