HIPPOS SECURE HISTORIC FINAL SPOT AFTER THRILLING SEMI-FINAL AGAINST KOBS
Jinja – May 2, 2025
The Jinja-based Hippos Rugby Club are through to their first-ever Nile Special Rugby League final after edging 13-time champions Kobs Rugby in a breathtaking semi-final encounter that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Playing at a packed Legends Rugby Grounds, the Hippos defied the odds and stunned the experienced Kobs side with a nail-biting 27–22 win on the day, sealing a narrow 49–47 aggregate victory over the two legs.
It was a game that lived up to its billing—a clash of grit, passion, and explosive rugby. The Hippos came into the second leg trailing by three points after losing the first leg 25–22, but their hunger and determination saw them flip the script in dramatic fashion.
From the first whistle, it was clear the Hippos meant business. Their physicality at the breakdown, slick backline play, and tactical kicking troubled the Kobs, who struggled to match the intensity in the early exchanges. However, the Kobs, true to their pedigree, mounted a late surge, but it was too little too late.
This victory marks a historic moment for the Jinja side, who continue to rise as a force in Ugandan rugby. They now await the winner between Heathens and Stanbic Black Pirates for a blockbuster final showdown at Kings Park Arena

“We knew it was going to be tough, but we believed in our system and trusted each other. This win is for Jinja and everyone who’s stood by us,” said a jubilant Hippos captain after the final whistle.
As the dust settles on a thrilling semi-final, one thing is clear: the Hippos are no longer underdogs—they are title contenders. 🏆🔥
