She Maroons Stun Kawempe Muslim with a Thrilling Comeback Victory
She Maroons produced a spirited second-half comeback to secure a stunning 2-1 victory over Kawempe Muslim on Sunday at the Kawempe Muslim SS Grounds, dealing a significant blow to the hosts’ title hopes in the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League.
A brilliant 67th-minute strike from Immaculate Kizza sealed the win for She Maroons, who had earlier leveled through Mercy Nabwire, overturning Shadia Nabirye’s first-half opener. The result extends Kawempe’s struggles in the second round, leaving them third in the standings with 25 points, six behind league leaders Kampala Queens.
Early Dominance, Missed Chances for Kawempe
Defending champions Kawempe Muslim started on the front foot and grabbed an early lead in the 8th minute through Nabirye, who capitalized on a rebound after Samalie Nakacwa’s cross was initially parried away by She Maroons’ goalkeeper Esther Akujo.
Despite controlling possession, Kawempe wasted several opportunities to extend their lead, with Nabirye and Agnes Nabukenya missing clear-cut chances. Akujo was instrumental in keeping She Maroons in the game, pulling off a crucial one-on-one save before halftime.
She Maroons Fight Back with Stunning Goals
After the break, She Maroons came out with renewed energy and found an equalizer in the 51st minute when Nabwire unleashed a powerful strike past goalkeeper Josephine Nambuya.
The visitors continued to push forward and were rewarded in the 67th minute when Kizza struck a thunderous long-range effort, sending the ball into the back of the net to complete the comeback and silence the home crowd.
Kawempe’s Late Efforts Fall Short
In a desperate attempt to turn things around, Kawempe introduced star midfielder Shakira Nyinagahirwa, making her long-awaited return from a knee injury. However, She Maroons remained resilient in defense, holding firm to secure their first-ever away victory over the five-time league champions.
The defeat sees Kawempe drop to third place, level on points with Amus College (25 points), who played out a 2-2 draw against Rines SS. Kampala Queens extended their lead at the top to 31 points with a 2-0 win over Makerere University on Saturday.
