Nkumba Lady Marines Force Game 7 After Dominant Win Over Our Savior Banyabo
Nkumba Lady Marines delivered a commanding performance to defeat Our Savior Banyabo 58-41 in Game 6, tying the series at 3-3 and forcing a decisive Game 7.
Banyabo entered the game riding a three-game winning streak and appeared poised to close out the series, but Nkumba had other plans. Despite a slow start, Nkumba gained control early, leading 10-8 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Banyabo struggled offensively, managing only four field goals, allowing Nkumba to extend their lead to seven points by halftime.
The Lady Marines maintained their dominance in the third quarter, stretching their lead to as many as 13 points. Banyabo lacked the energy to mount a comeback, and Nkumba never looked back, cruising to a 17-point victory.
Key Performers
Mellisa Kyazze and Shalom Jairah were instrumental for Nkumba, making big plays throughout the game. Shalom Jairah Muwanguzi was the standout performer, nearly securing a triple-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists. After struggling with turnovers in previous games, she was more cautious in Game 6, reducing their impact on the scoreboard.
Another key contributor was Catherine Nakimuli, who played the entire game and recorded 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. After a series of underwhelming performances that led to her benching, she rose to the occasion, demonstrating resilience and determination.
Coaches’ Reactions
Our Savior Banyabo head coach Angella Namirimu reflected on her team’s lackluster performance, noting concerns about fatigue and physical exhaustion.
“I don’t know if it’s fatigue or exhaustion, but today’s game showed that the ladies’ bodies weren’t moving. It wasn’t just about the mental but also the physical,” she stated.
On what adjustments they need to make for Game 7, Namirimu emphasized the importance of mental preparation.
“We just have to get in the right mental state to come compete and fight.”
For Banyabo, winning the championship carries greater significance beyond the game.
“It means a great deal for the program. We shall be taking the gospel to the NBL and sharing His (God’s) love in the NBL. It is more than just basketball. There is a bigger purpose that God is taking us there (NBL) for,” Namirimu added.
Nkumba’s head coach Timothy Odeke expressed relief after securing the win, acknowledging how it gives them another chance to fight for the title.
“It’s a big relief. It gives us a chance to properly compete for the title,” Odeke said.
Game Incident
During the game, youngster Mary Hazel collided with Faith Apio and was taken to the hospital. Coach Odeke later provided an update, confirming she sustained a deep cut requiring stitches but will recover in time.
With the series tied, all eyes now turn to the highly anticipated Game 7, where both teams will battle for a place in the NBL.
