
Uganda Gazelles Battle Hard but Fall to Egypt in AfroBasket Qualifiers”
Uganda’s Gazelles put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell 62-65 to Egypt in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
Egypt started the game strongly, racing to a 23-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. Despite lacking depth, the Gazelles displayed remarkable grit against the powerhouse Egyptian team. The second quarter saw Uganda improve their ball movement, with Jane Asinde and Paige Robinson attacking the paint aggressively. By halftime, the Gazelles had closed the gap to just one point, trailing 33-32.
The third quarter saw Egypt extend their lead slightly, outscoring Uganda 13-9 to take a 46-41 advantage into the final period. Jane Asinde contributed significantly, tallying 13 points, 11 rebounds (including four offensive boards), and three assists while converting five of six free throws. Paige Robinson led Uganda’s scoring with 16 points by the third quarter but struggled with six turnovers. Hope Akello provided a crucial contribution with seven points and three rebounds.
Other Gazelles struggled to make a major impact, with Claire Lamunu playing four minutes and recording a -4 rating with one turnover, while Jamila Nansikombi and Agatha managed just two points combined in limited minutes. Uganda briefly took their first lead in the fourth quarter when Asinde drew a foul and converted two free throws. However, Egypt responded swiftly and regained control.
Robinson finished as Uganda’s top scorer with 24 points, followed by Asinde with 18 points and Akello with 11 points. Egypt’s Nadine Mohamed (19 points) and Raneem Elgedawy (20 points) proved instrumental in securing the win for the hosts.
Coach Nick Natuhereza acknowledged it was a tough loss but pointed on the sluggish start in the first quarter.
Despite the narrow loss, the Gazelles showcased resilience and determination, pushing one of Africa’s top teams to the limit. Uganda will now regroup as they continue their quest for AfroBasket qualification.
