Kampala Queens Strengthen Title Bid with Win Over Uganda Martyrs
Kampala Queens took a firm step towards securing the Finance Trust Bank Women’s Super League title with a narrow 1-0 victory over Uganda Martyrs on Sunday at St. Gerald Stadium in Lubaga.
Peace Muduwa’s 39th-minute strike turned out to be the match-winner, capitalizing on a costly error from Uganda Martyrs goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu, who misjudged her charge off the line and failed to clear the danger. Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities, Kampala Queens were unable to widen the margin, with Sumaya Komuntale’s free kick smashing against the crossbar and substitute Kamiyat striking the post.
Catherine Nagadya also had a golden chance to double the lead but failed to convert after a well-crafted setup from Zainah Nandede.
Uganda Martyrs struggled to pose a significant attacking threat in the second half, as captain Latifa Nakasi found it difficult to break through the opposition defense.
Kaidu, who was responsible for the decisive goal, was later substituted for Joan Namusisi, who nearly gifted Kampala Queens another opportunity to score.
Despite introducing fresh legs, including new signings Namusisi, Moreen Afoyo, and Phiona Nabuddu, Uganda Martyrs could not find a way back into the game.
This victory cements Kampala Queens’ lead at the top with 28 points, stretching their advantage to three points over second-placed Kawempe Muslim, who were held to a goalless stalemate by Makerere University.
Kawempe dominated possession but found it difficult to break down a well-organized Makerere defense, dropping valuable points in the title race.
Their slip-up gave Amus College an opening to gain ground, as their 1-0 victory over Wakiso Hill brought them to 24 points, just a single point behind the second-placed team.
Elsewhere, She Corporate claimed a 1-0 win against Lady Doves in Jinja, thanks to a Jesca Namanda strike, while She Maroons and Olila High School played out a goalless draw. Tooro Queens secured a 2-1 triumph over Rines SS in another closely contested fixture.
