Peruth Chemutai earns silver medal in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase final

In a thrilling finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai earned a silver medal in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase final, setting a new national record with a time of 8:53.34. The race, held at the iconic Stade de France on Tuesday night, was a showcase of intense athleticism and strategic prowess. Chemutai, the defending Olympic champion, crossed the line just behind Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile Yavi, who clinched gold with a time of 8:52.76, setting a new Olympic Record.

The race was fast-paced from the outset, with Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech taking an early lead and setting a blistering pace. Chepkoech was quickly joined by Chemutai, Faith Cherotich of Kenya, Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew, and Yavi, forming a breakaway group that stretched the field. Despite Chemutai’s commanding presence and a strong performance throughout the race, Yavi’s late surge in the final laps saw her outpace the field to secure the top spot. Cherotich’s impressive finish allowed her to claim the bronze medal with a time of 8:55.15, while France’s Alice Finot finished fourth with her personal best of 8:55.15.

Chemutai’s performance was remarkable as she sought to become the first-ever two-time Olympic champion in the steeplechase. Despite her valiant effort, she was unable to maintain her lead as Yavi and Cherotich surged ahead in the final stretch. Chemutai, however, should be proud of her achievement, setting a new national record and continuing to solidify her place as one of the world’s premier steeplechase runners.

Reflecting on the race, Yavi expressed her joy, stating, “This is a dream come true. It has been such a hard journey to get to this point. I am so happy for me but also for the Bahraini people and the federation who have been so supportive of me since I started working with them.” Yavi’s confidence and preparation paid off, allowing her to achieve both personal and Olympic milestones. As Chemutai prepares for future challenges, her silver medal in Paris stands as a testament to her dedication and prowess in the sport.
