Murushid Juuko Retires at 27 years with two AFCON Finals on his name.
Express Football Club central defender Murushid ‘Sherif’ Juuko has officially retired from international football at the age of twenty seven.
The message of his retirement at 27 years, has hit the ground with shock not only to Uganda Cranes fans, but to fellow players as well.
At the time of his retirement, Juuko has managed over 50 caps for his country and has managed to score once.
Juuko announced his retirement through a document addresed to the Uganda football governing body FUFA.
The document read;
” Retirement from the national team, If you told me as a young boy i would have played for my country Uganda over fifty caps and line up against some of the biggest national teams, i would have told you it was a fantasy.”
” I am fortunate to have realised those dreams but however i feel i have served the nation enough and it’s time for me to call it a day with the Uganda Cranes.
This hasnt been a simple decision to make for me, my family and management but we think this is the right direction for me to take. I wamt to thank FUFA, my teammates at the national team (past amd present), the government and different stake holders gor their support during my time with the Uganda Cranes.
I wish the Uganda Cranes the best of luck in their next endevors and for now i will concetrate on club football with Express.” Murushid Juuko.
Referred to as the ‘hard rock’ in the Cranes back line, he managed 2 caps for the Uganda Hippos (U20) and 4 caps fpr the Uganda Kobs (23) before he was promoted to the senior team.
Juuko made his Cranes debut on 11 July 2014 against Seychelles that Uganda won 1-0.
He has managed to represent his country at two AFCON Finals in 2017 held in Gabon and in 2019.
Juuko guided the Cranes to the first AFCON finals since 1978. He was part of the team that defeated Comoros 1–0 to qualify for the 2017 finals.
Having missed the first game against Ghana due to a suspension picked up during qualifiers he played 180 minutes against Egypt and Mali.
At the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Juuko played two matches, the first one against DR Congo and another against Senegal after sustaining a hamstring injury. The Uganda Cranes ended the championship in the round of 16.
Juuko’s last Cranes game was Agaisnt West Africans Mali in which he was red carded in the goalless draw at Kitende in September after elbowing forward Ibrahim Kone in the second half.
He was fined Swiss Francs 5,000 ($ 5414) (UGX 20millions) and suspended for two games by FIFA which ban he served.
Juuko also a graduate from Vipers SC academy (SMASK), played for Bunamwaya SC now Vipers SC, Entebbe FC, Simba SC, Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca before joining reighning league Champions.
