The Zimbabwe Sables secured a narrow 22-20 victory over the Rugby Cranes of Uganda in a gripping quarterfinal match of the Rugby Africa Cup on Saturday. Despite a spirited second-half performance led by Philip Wokorach, Uganda fell short at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
First Half: Zimbabwe Dominates
From the outset, the Sables asserted their dominance. Camping in Uganda’s half, they capitalized on early pressure, with Edward Sigauke breaking through the open side corner to score a try just six minutes into the game. Ian Prior successfully converted, giving Zimbabwe an early lead.
Zimbabwe’s pack was formidable at set pieces, overpowering Uganda in scrums and mauls. Their efficiency at rucks also led to multiple turnovers. Although Prior missed a penalty attempt, the Southern Africans maintained control. Tukudzwa Musingwini exploited space on the left wing to score another try, extending the lead to 12-0. Prior then added a penalty, and Kudzai Mushawi capped off a dominant first half with a try from a set piece, leaving Uganda trailing 22-0 at halftime.
Second Half: Uganda’s Fightback
Facing a daunting deficit, Cranes coach Fred Mudoola made tactical changes at the break, introducing Joseph Aredo and Alex Aturinda. Uganda’s response was swift and led by the talismanic Philip Wokorach. Wokorach ignited the comeback with a try and assisted his brother, Innocent Gwokto, in scoring. He then converted both tries, reducing the gap to 22-14.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Uganda continued to press and was rewarded with another try, closing the score to 22-20. However, two missed penalties by Wokorach in the dying moments of the game dashed Uganda’s hopes of completing the comeback.
