Uganda Cricket Association Ushers in New Leadership Era

Eras come and go, and sport often highlights this cycle of change — cricket being no exception. The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has turned a new page in its leadership following the Annual General Meeting (AGM), where Kavuma Jackson was elected as the new chairman, edging out Fred Lutaaya by four votes (10-6).

Kavuma takes over from Michael Nuwagaba, who served as chairman for the past four years since his election in May 2021.

Joining him at the helm is Denis Musali, stepping into the role of Honorary Secretary, a position previously held by Kavuma. Lelia Namaganda Ondeko, the former U19 Girls Team Manager, assumes the role of Women’s Representative.

A Vision for Progress: Kavuma’s Roadmap

In his post-election address, Kavuma expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and laid out an ambitious plan for Uganda’s cricketing future.

“First and foremost, I thank the Almighty for giving me this opportunity and the delegates who have entrusted me with this mandate. My goal is to elevate Uganda to ODI status and improve cricket as a whole,” — Kavuma Jackson.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead — including financial accountability concerns and governance issues — Kavuma emphasized his commitment to building a solid foundation.

His first priority will be ensuring compliance with the new sports law, aligning UCA’s constitution with government regulations.

“In the first two months, we must focus on compliance with the new sports law so that by April or May, our constitution is fully aligned. Governance and accountability are key,” he affirmed.

Addressing Financial Concerns

Financial transparency was a key topic during the AGM, with the association’s UGX 800 million deficit raising concerns. Kavuma assured stakeholders that accountability will be central to his leadership and encouraged constructive criticism.

“This is a public office, not an individual one. We uphold integrity and welcome positive critique. Hold us accountable where necessary,” Kavuma urged.

Expanding Cricket Beyond Schools

Beyond governance, Kavuma is focused on broadening cricket’s reach. Initiatives such as the Corporate League, Mini Corporate League, and social cricket aim to introduce the sport to professionals and the wider public.

With the $5.5 million sponsorship deal from Lyca Mobile — the largest in UCA’s history — alongside backing from Nile Breweries, Dream Catchers, and private benefactors, Kavuma believes that prudent financial management will help Uganda achieve its cricketing ambitions.

His immediate priorities include:

  • Overseeing the Tanzania U19 team’s visit.
  • Preparing for the Independence Day women’s tournament.
  • Ensuring Uganda’s U19 team is ready for the Africa Qualifiers in Nigeria.

Musali’s Commitment to Unity and Stability

New Honorary Secretary Denis Musali echoed Kavuma’s vision, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and stability within the UCA leadership.

“One thing we must do is ensure a good relationship between the chairman and the secretary. We must work together rather than assert power over each other,” — Denis Musali.

He acknowledged previous tensions within UCA but stressed the need for a collaborative approach.

“We want to avoid the power struggles that characterized past administrations. Our goal is unity and progress,” he added.

Musali also highlighted the work done by the outgoing administration and expressed his desire to build on that foundation.

“Michael and his team have done well over the last four years in building a foundation. Our job is to take the game to the next level,” he concluded.

A Unified Path Forward

With Kavuma Jackson steering the ship, Denis Musali managing the association’s affairs, and Lelia Namaganda Ondeko advocating for women’s cricket, the new UCA leadership presents a united front.

Their collective focus will be on governance reforms, expanding cricket participation, and ensuring financial accountability, all while preparing Uganda for greater international success.

As Kavuma aptly summed it up:

“For me, it’s about principle. We must uphold integrity, welcome good criticism, and work towards taking cricket in Uganda to the next level.”

Ugandan cricket is poised for an exciting era, and with this new leadership team, the journey toward greater heights has just begun.
