Defending champions Muteesa I Royal University kicked off their 2026/27 University Football League campaign in emphatic fashion cruising to a convincing 3-0 victory over Bugema University in Group B clash at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

Coached by former Uganda Cranes international Tonny Mawejje, Muteesa I Royal University looked sharp, organized and hungry from the first whistle.

It was striker Lubega Shabil who set the tone early leading the attack with intent.

The champions’ pacy and skillful wingers were the difference on the day.

Katende Erick came close with an early attempt on goal but Bugema’s solid defender Kamulungi Nuwagaba cleared off the line.

Moments later, player of the Match, winger Ochan Ivan made a brilliant solo run down the flank only to be denied again by the resilient Kamulungi Nuwagaba.

In midfield, Ssemaganda Gideon was outstanding dictating play and controlling the tempo for Muteesa I Royal launching wave after wave of attacks into Bugema’s half.

Just before halftime, the pressure paid off. Striker Lubega Shabil tapped in from close range after a sublime assist from the electrifying Ochan Ivan.

Muteesa returned from the break even more dominant. Katende Erick doubled the lead reacting quickest to score from a rebound.

Substitute Sam Mutambo the hero who scored the winner in last season’s final to clinch the championship added icing on the cake with a superb third goal.

Bugema tried to pull one back in the 89th minute through Mwandha Jonah but Muteesa’s goalkeeper Kayanja Joram produced a fine save to preserve the clean sheet.

“We have started the season with a win and our main target is to defend the University Football League title,” said Muteesa I Royal University Head Coach Tonny Mawejje after the game.
