Kawempe Muslim LFC Subject Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC to First Defeat to Claim Summit

Defending champions Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende to climb to the top of the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League table in what was the most anticipated fixture of the weekend.

The visitors started brightly and nearly took an early lead.

First, Brenda Munyana’s dangerous attempt was cleared off the line by Asia Nakibuuka for a corner.

Shortly after, Deborah Nanvule tried to put Uganda Martyrs ahead but her effort was brilliantly tipped away by Kawempe goalkeeper Juliet Nambuya.

In response, Kawempe Muslim began to grow into the game.

Forward Latifa Nakasi had a golden opportunity after a fine cross from Jovia Nakagolo but her effort sailed over the crossbar.

Moments later captain Shakira Nyinagahirwa also went close from another Nakagolo delivery only to see her shot go wide.

Eventually the pressure paid off. In the 22nd minute, lethal striker Agnes Nabukenya punished a defensive lapse by Uganda Martyrs and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Joan Namusisi to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Uganda Martyrs tried to respond.

Left-footed forward Angel Kigongo Auki had a chance in the 34th minute but her effort flew over the bar.

From that point onward, Kawempe took full control of the game.

And just before halftime, they doubled their advantage.

At the stroke of halftime, right-back Samali Nakacwa launched a long throw-in that found Agnes Nabukenya who expertly controlled the ball on her chest before firing a superb half-volley to give her side a commanding 2-0 lead at the break.

Coming into the second half, Uganda Martyrs Head coach Edward Kasozi Ssozi made tactical changes that shifted the momentum.

He introduced forwards Sharon Nabbowa and Maureen Kizza who immediately injected pace and urgency into the attack.

Indeed, Nabbowa almost made an instant impact weaving through the defence before setting up Auki whose shot crashed against the upright.

Then in the 64th minute, substitute Kizza came close again heading just inches wide from Auki’s corner.

Furthermore, Uganda Martyrs finally got their reward.

Following a poor clearance by Kawempe defender Sharifah Nakimera the ball fell kindly to Kizza’s feet who lobbed it over an off-line goalkeeper Nambuya to pull one back and make it 2-1.

Despite Uganda Martyrs pushing hard for an equalizer and creating several chances, the Kawempe defence remained resolute and stood firm.

As the game approached its conclusion, Kawempe nearly extended their lead.

Latifa Nakasi saw her shot go just wide while another late opportunity saw Anita Namata’s cross find Nakagolo whose effort also went over the bar.
