Silverbacks Coach Optimistic Ahead of AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers

Uganda’s national basketball team, the Silverbacks, have concluded their third training session ahead of the FIBA AfroBasket 2025 Qualifiers in Tripoli, Libya. Head coach Mandy Juruni has expressed confidence in his squad as they prepare for the tournament, set to take place from February 21-23. This time, the team has been afforded a six-day training window, a significant improvement compared to previous qualifiers.

Juruni, alongside assistant coach Ben Komakech and the rest of the technical team, will guide the Silverbacks through a crucial campaign with hopes of securing a spot at the continental showpiece. The squad features a blend of local talent and experienced professionals playing abroad, including former NBA player Ishmail Carzell Wainright, who currently plies his trade with Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel.

A key highlight in the squad is the return of point guard Tony Drileba, who has been sidelined for six months due to injury. Speaking on his comeback, Drileba shared his excitement:

The surgery was last year, and I’ve had enough time to heal and go through physical therapy. I feel I’ve made a full recovery now

His return adds depth and experience to the team as they gear up for a highly competitive tournament.
