NEC Reclaims Top Spot in Uganda Premier League with Victory Over Wakiso Giants
NEC FC has ascended back to the summit of the Uganda Premier League (UPL) standings following a convincing 2-0 win against Wakiso Giants at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Saturday.
The opening goal came from a misplaced pass by Hassan Senyonjo, which was intercepted by Jacob Okao. He then set up Jarieko, who delivered a precise pass to Muzamiru Mutyaba, allowing him to execute a well-placed low shot past goalkeeper Aritho.
Wakiso Giants had a chance to equalize in the 62nd minute when Hudson Mbalire, assisted by a header from Bagoole, struck the crossbar. They came close again in the 85th minute, but goalkeeper Sebalunyo made a crucial save against a close-range scramble, and Atendele cleared the subsequent danger.
NEC FC secured their victory with a second goal, capitalizing on a lost possession and finishing with power and accuracy, which solidified their lead.
This victory restored NEC to the top position after briefly dropping to third due to wins by rivals Vipers and KCCA earlier in the weekend.
Wakiso Giants currently sit in 11th place with seven points.
NEC’s next match will see them travel to Najjembe to take on newly-promoted Lugazi on October 30, while Wakiso Giants will aim to regroup ahead of their home game against Express at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on October 31.
As all 16 teams reach the sixth game of the season, the competition intensifies, with NEC, KCCA, and Vipers vying for dominance at the top of the league.
