Netball Uganda elected Joycline Ucanda as its new president. This significant event follows a year-and-a-half suspension of the previous administration, marking a turning point for the sport in the country. The election was characterized by unity within the netball community, as all 12 members of the executive committee were elected unopposed, signaling a collective commitment to revitalizing the sport.
The Uganda Netball Federation has faced turbulent times, grappling with governance issues that prompted intervention from high-level authorities, including the First Lady. Investigations by the Auditor General and Uganda Police into the activities of former president Sarah Barbra Kityo highlighted the urgent need for reform. In light of this, Moses Mwase, chairman of the Normalisation Committee, emphasized the importance of a thorough and consultative election process to ensure a smooth transition of power.
In her acceptance speech, President Ucanda outlined a compelling vision for the future of netball in Uganda. She pledged to prioritize transparency and accountability while focusing on the development of grassroots programs. A central goal of her administration is to secure a permanent home for netball, providing dedicated facilities for training, competitions, and administrative functions. This vision is crucial for nurturing talent and promoting the sport at all levels.
Ucanda also underscored the importance of unity among regional delegates, stating, “We must work together as one to elevate the sport of netball in Uganda. By fostering a spirit of togetherness and love for the game, we can achieve great things.” This call for collaboration reflects her commitment to building a strong foundation for the sport’s growth.
The newly elected executive committee comprises a diverse group of individuals who are not only passionate about netball but also bring a wealth of experience to their roles. With Ucanda at the helm, there is a renewed sense of optimism that Uganda Netball is poised for a brighter future, one characterized by unity, development, and success on both national and international stages.
