Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), recently completed a meaningful three-day visit to Uganda, underscoring the role of sports as a tool for unity and social integration, particularly in the context of refugees. His visit reflects Uganda’s commitment to using sports as a vehicle for progress and community cohesion.
Day One: Planting Seeds of Change
On his first day, Bach visited the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC), where he planted a Warburgia ugandensis tree, known locally as Mukuzannume. This unique species, celebrated for its medicinal properties, symbolizes hope and resilience. Accompanied by notable figures, including IOC member William Fredrick Blick and Uganda Olympic Committee president Dr. Donald Rukare, Bach’s tree-planting ceremony highlighted the connection between sports, community, and environmental stewardship.
This act not only emphasizes the IOC’s commitment to sustainability but also serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing both the environment and social bonds through sports.
Day Two: Advocating for Unity Through Sports
On his second day, Bach met with Uganda’s Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja. During their discussion, he emphasized the power of sports to unite people, even amidst geopolitical tensions. Citing the upcoming Paris Olympics, he advocated for sports as a bridge that can foster peace and understanding.
Bach also pointed out Uganda’s potential as a progressive nation in the realm of refugee support. He encouraged the country to leverage its experiences in security and stability in the region—particularly in Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—to enhance its influence and promote social integration through sports.
Bach was also joined by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, to discuss the IOC-funded Game Connect project. This initiative, developed by the Olympic Refuge Foundation, utilizes sports to support the mental health of refugees and facilitate their integration into host communities.
Day Three: Government Commitment to Refugee Integration
The 3rd day of Bach’s visit was marked by a significant meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at State House in Entebbe. Here, the president pledged the government’s support for initiatives that integrate refugees into sports. This commitment is crucial for enhancing the well-being of refugees and fostering social cohesion within Ugandan society.
President Museveni also offered assistance in acquiring land for the construction of an Olympic swimming pool and village, signifying a long-term investment in sports infrastructure that could benefit both local and refugee communities. This partnership highlights a vision where sports can play a vital role in development and social integration.
