Vipers SC Pays Emotional Tribute to Fallen Star Abubakar Lawaal

Vipers Sports Club, alongside representatives from the Nigerian High Commission, FUFA officials, the football fraternity, and the entire Vipers family, gathered in an emotional dua to honor the life and legacy of their fallen star, Abubakar Lawal.

In a heartfelt address, Vipers SC President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa described Lawal as the epitome of professionalism.

Lawal was a true definition of a professional player. You didn’t need to open a dictionary or any other book to understand what a professional footballer was — we had him here, Dr. Mulindwa said

He praised Lawal’s exceptional discipline, kindness, humility, and integrity, highlighting his profound impact on the club both on and off the pitch.

Lawal’s dedication to Vipers SC was unwavering. His commitment to winning a league title with the club saw him extend his stay for three and a half years, a period in which he earned the admiration and respect of his peers, coaches, and fans. Dr. Mulindwa also commended Lawal’s family, particularly his older brother Mansoor Lawal, who despite the deep grief, spoke positively about the club’s relationship with the late player. “Mansoor’s words are a true testament to the bond Lawal shared with Vipers,” Mulindwa noted.

In honor of Lawal’s memory, Vipers SC has dedicated their upcoming Uganda Premier League match against Mbarara City to their fallen star, vowing to play with the same passion and commitment that Lawal embodied.

Amidst the tributes, Mansoor Lawal expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Mulindwa and Vipers SC for their support.

Dr. Lawrence, thank you very much. I want to take this opportunity to appreciate all you are doing to ensure Abubakar’s body is returned to us. Though he left with both his legs, unfortunately, he couldn’t return the same way. But we know Allah never burdens us beyond what we can bear,Mansoor said.

Vipers captain Milton Kariisa was equally emotional, struggling to find the right words to describe the late Lawal.

He was a great person. It is indeed a difficult moment for us, but I pray we find the strength to get through this. To the family back in Nigeria, we stand with you and pray for God’s peace during this trying time, Kariisa said

Dr. Mulindwa also took a firm stance against the spread of misinformation surrounding Lawal’s death. Initial reports falsely claimed the player died in a motor accident, while police investigations revealed he was found lying at Voie Mall after reportedly falling from the third floor.

I call upon the media to act professionally. There is no prize for breaking the news first — it only reflects amateurism, Mulindwa emphasized.

He urged the Uganda Police to expedite their investigations to uncover the truth behind Lawal’s tragic death, insisting that no stone should be left unturned.

Regarding repatriation plans, Vipers SC executives confirmed that Lawal’s body is expected to be flown back to Nigeria on Sunday. The club has taken on the significant logistical costs, arranging a chartered flight from Lagos to Sokoto, a journey of an additional 900 kilometers. The necessary paperwork is set to be finalized by tomorrow morning.

In a final gesture of support, Vipers SC announced that the club will remit six months’ salary to Lawal’s family. The late player leaves behind a family of nine brothers and two daughters, for whom he was the primary breadwinner.

The Vipers family, and indeed the wider football community, mourn the loss of a remarkable player and an even more exceptional human being. Abubakar Lawal’s legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
