In a significant development for Ugandan basketball, Jane Asinde, the captain of the national women’s team, the Gazelles, has signed with Spanish club Durán Maquinaria Ensino. This move comes on the heels of her outstanding performance at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt, where she was honored as the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Asinde’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the Gazelles to a historic 74-63 victory over hosts Egypt in the final, securing Uganda’s qualification for the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket tournament. Throughout the qualifiers, she showcased her versatility and dominance, averaging 18.8 points, 10 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. Her standout performance included a tournament-high 28 points against South Sudan.

Durán Maquinaria Ensino officially announced Asinde’s acquisition from Chinese basketball club Henan Phoenix, marking a new chapter in her professional career. Her stint in China was a crucial stepping stone, allowing her to develop her game at a high level before making the switch to Spain.

Before her move to China, Asinde was a key figure for the JKL Lady Dolphins in Uganda, leading them to their fourth National Women’s Basketball Championship title in the playoffs. Her ability to perform under pressure and lead her teams to success has made her one of Uganda’s most promising basketball talents.

Asinde’s transfer to the Spanish league is expected to further elevate her game, as she competes in one of Europe’s most competitive basketball environments. Ugandan basketball fans will be eagerly watching her journey, hopeful that her success will inspire the next generation of players.

With this move, Asinde continues to break barriers, proving that Ugandan basketball talent can make a mark on the global stage.
