NETBALL: Mubiru names 13 players for Vitality Cup Showdown in the UK
Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes, is set to represent the country on the global stage at the Vitality Cup, a prestigious four-nation tournament scheduled from February 1 to 9, 2025, in the United Kingdom.
Head coach Rashid Mubiru announced the final 13-player squad on Saturday, blending experienced stars with fresh talent. Notable newcomers Amiya Penelope and Joan Ryekoboth join seasoned players like Racheal Nanyonga, Sandra Nambirige, and team captain Irene Eyaru. Mubiru emphasized the stringent selection process, highlighting the importance of skill, discipline, and readiness.
The She Cranes face formidable opponents, including host nation England, South Africa, and Malawi. They will kick off their campaign against South Africa on February 1 in Nottingham.
Ahead of their departure for the UK on January 29, the team will take a brief training break to finalize preparations. Mubiru expressed confidence in the squad, stating, “We are ready to give our best and make Uganda proud.”
While the announcement brought joy for the final 13 players, it also meant disappointment for six who missed the cut: Filedaus Namulema, Sylvia Nanyonga, Lilian Achola, Betty Namukaaya, Akello Malisera, and Deborah Nakijoba.
