Pepsi University Football league 2016 finalists Nkumba University, got their first win of the 2023 season when they beat Gulu University 4-0 in a league game played on Wednesday at Nkumba arena in Entebbe.

It was a morale boasting win for the Beach boys, a side that is aiming at winning their first ever title and that lost their opening encounter 3-1 against St Lawrence University away from home.

Agile forward Irivia Mette bagged a brace in a period of seven minutes, when he found the back of the net in the 44th and the 51st minute.

Speedy and energetic forward Jamal Nsereko and Isaac Musuga, were the other scorers for the Entebbe based institution that is eager to test the sweetness of the UFL title.

Mete and then, Nsereko who seemed injured throughout the game and was later substituted, before breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute, had missed some earlier chances for the hosts that started on a very brilliant note.

Before Midfielder Musuga clinically put the icing on the cake, with a well struck left footed shot outside the 18 years box to make it four, Nsereko had got another very clear-cut opportunity to double his tally and to make it three for the hosts, but failed to hit the target when he was clearly set up by the unselfish Mete.

Nkumba University head coach Sulaiman Bbosa, was happy with the result but pointed at being not clinical infront of goal in the post match interview.

“That’s how football is, sometimes you play bad and then another time you play good football, we lost our first game 3-1 against St Lawrence, we had a lot of challenges in that game, we came back and rectified them, the display can tell, atleast the way we played is a bit better, we scored four but again, we didn’t utilize many chances, it would have been like 8-0, but I credit boys that we have achieved our target, we came in the game to whitewash the negative goals we had and even to get three points which we did.” Bbosa stated as quoted by Voice of Bugerere.

Gulu head coach Robert Umony, pointed at major injuries in his squad for the unpleasing result away from home.

“It’s a new season, and some times it happens like that, loosing like this, is a bad result but not very bad, we have to build from there, the reason for this big this loss, is my five key players who were out of this game with Injuries something that costed me a lot. But it’s a home and a way league. not a foot day for us today but we can play better and we shall go back and rectify that some of our problems.” Umony stated.

The Pepsi University Football league actions returns on Thursday, as under dogs University of Kisubu (Unik) host two- time champions Uganda Matyrs University Nkozi.

It is anticipated to be, a big hill to climb for the hosts, when they take on the 2017 and a very well organised Erick Kisuuze side aiming to defend the title defend they also won last year.
