Sommet Basketball Club maintained their perfect start to the 2026 National Basketball League season, securing an 87–80 victory over UMU Flames at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
The Nkonzi-based side had to withstand a spirited late comeback from Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Flames in an entertaining end-to-end contest.
UMU made an early statement, closing the first quarter with an Ernest Nassasira layup to take a 23–15 lead. The Flames showed improved ball movement and control in the second quarter, but Sommet regrouped and trimmed the deficit. Despite their efforts, UMU still held a 39–30 advantage at halftime.
Sommet emerged from the locker room with renewed intensity. Joseph Chuma ignited the comeback with a driving layup as Sommet seized momentum and gradually turned the tide. Their aggressive play on both ends of the floor saw them open up a 14-point cushion heading into the final quarter.
The Flames refused to fold. With 2:26 remaining on the clock, a quick 4–0 run brought UMU within a single point at 75–74, setting up a tense finish. However, Sommet held their composure in the closing minutes, executing efficiently to pull away and seal a seven-point victory.
Joseph Chuma delivered a standout performance, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He was well supported by Peter Cheng (16 points), Emilagba Abolahji (15), Nkulu Kaseya (13), and John Focus Teko (10), all finishing in double figures.
For UMU Flames, Gatwech Koang Wankoak led the scoring with 22 points, while Agot Agot added 16 and Joshua Duallo contributed 14 in a losing effort.
Meanwhile, City Oilers also improved to 2–0 after cruising to a 76–57 win over UPDF Tomahawks.
