UFL: Tricky Groups for Holders Nkozi & One-time Champions Nkumba
Holders and Two time champions; 2017 2024/25 Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi have been draw against former Champions Kampala University, Kampala International University, MUST, UNIK and new boys Mountain of the Moon and 2023/24 champions Nkumba will face fellow former champions (2021), Kyambogo at the group stage level according the Pepsi University Football League draws held today Thursday at Kati Kati restaurant in Kampala.
In the other group games, Nkumba will face Busitema, Soroti, YMCA and ISBAT University.
Nkozi beat Makerere University to win their first title in 2017 and SLAU to win their second.
This year’s edition will see five new faces in the competition that include; Mountains of the Moon University. Censor University, Africa Renewal University, Soroti University, Lira University.
Makerere, UCU, Ndejje and IUIU will face off in what is termed as group of death along with minnows, Kumi and King Ceasor University.
Other league big boys, MUBS and SLAU will lock horns early in group D action with new boys Lira, Muni and Gulu.
Change in 13th Edition Format;
The Quarter final teams will be determined by the five teams that will top each group and the 3- best second placed teams.
” Unlike in past editions where teams played each other home and away, the new season will follow a format similar to the UEFA Champions League. During the group stage, teams will meet only once—either at home or away. Group winners will advance directly to the quarterfinals, joined by the three best second-placed teams to complete the eight-team for the quarter finals stage.” Voice of Bugerere stated.
For starters, the UFL started with only six institutions in 2012 where Makerere emerged champions, Makerere University Business School were the 1st Runners Up, Nkumba University 2nd Runners Up and Kyambogo University, Kampala International University and Uganda Martyrs University 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.
