Blacks Power Stun NEC to Reach Uganda Cup Round of 16

Uganda Premier League side NEC FC suffered a shocking exit from the Stanbic Uganda Cup after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of FUFA Big League outfit, Blacks Power, in a dramatic Round of 32 clash at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

Second-half goals from Innocent Maduka and youngster Joshua Omara sealed a well-deserved victory for the Lira-based side, sending them into the last 16 of the prestigious domestic cup competition.

NEC, last season’s Uganda Cup finalists — where they fell to Kitara FC at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku — came into the match with high hopes of making another deep run. However, their ambitions were cut short by a resolute and tactically sound Blacks Power side.

The game remained goalless at halftime, with NEC enjoying the lion’s share of possession but struggling to break down Blacks Power’s compact defense. Their best chance came early in the second half when Paul Mucureezi stepped up to take a penalty. However, his effort was controversially disallowed for a double touch, a decision that left the home side stunned and frustrated.

Blacks Power capitalized on the momentum shift, and in the 65th minute, Innocent Maduka broke the deadlock, skillfully weaving through NEC’s defense before slotting past goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Joshua Omara put the result beyond doubt. The youngster linked up brilliantly with Maduka before calmly finishing to secure the crucial second goal.

Despite late efforts from NEC, Blacks Power’s defense held firm, and their goalkeeper produced key saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Speaking after the match, NEC head coach Hussein Mbalangu acknowledged the disappointing result but remained defiant about his team’s strength at home. “It’s a slaughterhouse; this one has gone, but it’s still a slaughterhouse,” he said.

Blacks Power coach Bob Obira, on the other hand, praised his team’s preparation and execution. “We knew how they set up, and we prepared well. Playing afternoon football in the heat is something we are used to,” Obira stated.

The victory sees Blacks Power, currently second in the FUFA Big League standings, advance to the Round of 16 — a testament to their impressive cup run so far.

For NEC, the focus now shifts back to their league campaign, with mounting pressure on Mbalangu following recent dropped points against Police FC. They will look to bounce back when they host Lugazi FC this Saturday at Lugogo.

The Uganda Cup continues to deliver thrilling surprises, with lower-tier sides proving their mettle against the country’s top clubs — and Blacks Power’s victory over NEC is yet another reminder of the magic this competition holds.
