Namuwongo Blazers Reinforce Squad with Four Key Signings

The Namuwongo Blazers have made a bold statement ahead of the 2025 National Basketball League (NBL) season by unveiling four new signings at their home ground, ABJA Parks, on January 29. After reaching the semifinals in the previous campaign, the Blazers are determined to push further and challenge for the NBL title.

Experienced Additions to the Roster

Among the new recruits are two former City Oilers stars, Tonny Drileba and James Okello, alongside ex-Our Savior players Moses Mugisha and Henry Ssebagala. The additions bring a wealth of experience and talent, bolstering the Blazers’ lineup as they aim to dethrone the reigning champions.

Drileba and Okello, who parted ways with City Oilers midway through the 2024 season, spent time abroad before their return to Uganda. Okello featured for Tigers Basketball in Burundi, while Drileba played for Chaux Sports in the Democratic Republic of Congo until an injury sidelined him.

Their championship pedigree is undeniable, having collectively secured 21 NBL titles with City Oilers. Drileba’s stats from 2024 reflect his all-around game, averaging 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.4 steals, while shooting an impressive 48.9% from the field. Okello, on the other hand, contributed 9.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, shooting at 48.1%.

Players’ Perspective on the Move

Okello expressed confidence in his new team’s potential:

The Blazers have been one of the best teams, and I felt like they missed important pieces like us. I believe our addition will elevate them to the next level.”

Drileba was drawn to the team’s structured approach: “When coach Esco approached me, I felt it was a good organization to be a part of,” he noted.

Mugisha, who had a stellar first round with Our Savior before slightly slowing down, averaged 12.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. His decision to join the Blazers was driven by their competitive nature: “I wanted a team that would compete,” he remarked.

Ssebagala, known for his offensive spark, posted averages of 10.3 points, 4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. He is eager to contribute, promising fans an intense performance: “I am coming to compete and will give it my best.”

What’s Next for the Blazers?

The 2025 NBL season tips off on March 14, with the Blazers’ first opponent yet to be announced. The team has seen several departures, and rumors suggest they are still active in the transfer market, searching for more reinforcements.

The big question remains—can Namuwongo Blazers finally dethrone the 10-time champions, City Oilers? With their new acquisitions, they may have the firepower to do just that.
