The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, officially kicked off their preparations for the FIBA Zone V Qualifiers with their first training session at the Lugogo Arena. The qualifiers, set for February 3–8 in Cairo, Egypt, will be crucial as the Gazelles aim to secure a spot at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket.
The training session was led by newly appointed head coach Nicholas Natuhereza, who took over from Goran Lojo earlier this week. Natuhereza, working with 10 of the 15 summoned players, expressed confidence in the team’s blend of experience and youth.
“It’s an honor to lead the Gazelles and represent the country. We want to build on what we did in 2023. Some of the girls are rusty coming from the break, but we want to keep improving,” Natuhereza said.
A Balanced Squad with Depth
The Gazelles’ roster, captained by forward Jane Asinde, features a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, including Hope Akello, Paige Robinson, Shakira Nanvubya, Perus Nyamwenge, Sheila Lamunu, Maxine Anyango, Jamilah Nansikombi, Agatha Kamwada, Zoe Atek, Sarah Namale, Mellisa Akullo, Sharon Kirabo, Becky Longom, and Claire Lamunu.
Coach Natuhereza highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between the U18 and senior teams, noting, “We have tried to bridge the gap to give young players experience and motivation to grow.”
Training Focus and Goals
The initial training session emphasized fitness, ball handling, and team combinations as the Gazelles aim to sharpen their skills and build chemistry. Having finished seventh at the 2023 edition in Kigali, the team knows the stakes are high; they must reach the finals in Cairo to qualify for the Women’s AfroBasket.
With the tournament just weeks away, the Gazelles are determined to make an impact and continue their upward trajectory in African basketball. Under Natuhereza’s leadership, the team is focused on preparing both mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.
The FIBA Zone V Qualifiers promise to be a competitive platform, and the Gazelles are gearing up to showcase their strength and resilience on the continental stage.
