The Uganda Premier League (UPL) has announced that all clubs will observe a moment of silence during Match Day 8 fixtures in honor of referee Peter Kabugo, who tragically passed away on Friday. This heartfelt tribute aims to commemorate Kabugo’s contributions to the football community, following his sudden and untimely death during a match.
In an official statement, the UPL Secretariat expressed profound sorrow at the loss of Kabugo, highlighting his integral role in the Uganda football fraternity. The moment of silence will commence immediately after the referee’s whistle and will be observed across all league matches from Tuesday through Saturday. Assistant referee Kabugo collapsed during a UPL match between SC Villa and UPDF at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku. The incident occurred in the 70th minute of a game in which SC Villa dominated, ultimately winning 5-0. As the teams launched a counter-attack that led to Villa’s fifth goal, Kabugo fell to the ground, prompting immediate medical attention from both teams. Despite the swift arrival of an ambulance and transportation to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
