The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has unveiled its squad for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup Challenge League B, set to be held from November 4 to 16, 2024, at Lugogo and Entebbe Oval. This tournament represents a vital opportunity for Uganda as they strive to secure One Day International (ODI) status and progress towards the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Riazat Ali Shah, an experienced all-rounder with seven years on the national team, has been appointed captain for this important campaign. Shah takes over from Brian Masaba, who led Uganda in the ICC Men’s World Cup held in the West Indies and the USA before stepping down. Under Shah’s leadership, the team aims to build on its recent performances and work cohesively towards their shared goal.
“It is not going to be a challenging job for me,” Shah stated confidently. “Everyone on this team knows their role and strives to execute it. The captaincy is an additional responsibility, but we are all working toward the same goal—achieving ODI status.”
The squad selected by head coach Abhay Sharma and the UCA Selectors Committee blends seasoned players with emerging talent. Noteworthy inclusions are Shrideep Mangela and Raghav Dhawan, both of whom showcased their skills in Uganda’s recent series against Papua New Guinea. Additionally, former U-19 captain Pascal Murungi makes a return to the side following an impressive stint in Zimbabwe.
