SC Villa Triumphs Over Singida Black Stars in CECAFA Club Championship

On Friday, July 12, SC Villa registered their first victory at the CECAFA Club Championship, defeating Singida Black Stars FC 3-1 at the Azam Complex. This win, marked by goals from Najib Yiga, Patrick Jonah Kakande, and Reagan Mpande, earned the Jogoos a well-deserved triumph in Group C.

Najib Yiga, one of the new signings, opened the scoring just before halftime with a stunning long-range effort that eluded goalkeeper Benedict Haule. Yiga cut inside from the right and unleashed a powerful shot to give Villa the lead.

Early in the second half, Villa extended their advantage when Reagan Mpande was fouled inside the box, resulting in a penalty. Patrick Jonah Kakande coolly converted, sending Haule the wrong way to make it 2-0. Mpande then added his name to the scoresheet, finishing from close range after a precise cross from David Owori bypassed the Singida defense.

Although the Tanzanian side managed to pull one back through Marouf Tchakeh’s free-kick at the hour mark, it was merely a consolation. With this win, Villa now sits at four points, having previously drawn 0-0 with South Sudan’s El Merriekh Bentiu.

In the other Group C match, APR returned to the top of the table with six points after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over El Merriekh. The current standings are:

  1. APR – 6 points
  2. SC Villa – 4 points
  3. El Merriekh – 1 point
  4. Singida Black Stars – 0 points

With APR defeating South Sudan’s El Merriekh Bentiu 1-0 in Group C, Villa must now overcome the Rwandan army team, which leads the standings with 6 points, two points ahead of the Uganda Premier League champions.

According to the tournament format, the top team from each of the three groups, along with the best runner-up, will move on to the semi-finals. SC Villa’s upcoming match is critical as they aim to secure their spot in the knockout stages.
